Time for action

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka reaffirms India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and “Mahasagar” vision, emphasizing strong bilateral ties. His call for the full implementation of Sri Lanka’s constitution and the long-pending Provincial Council elections highlights India’s concern for the Tamil community’s aspirations. Ensuring political autonomy and fair representation is crucial for Sri Lanka’s internal stability and democratic integrity.
The livelihood of fishermen remains a recurring issue in India-Sri Lanka relations. Modi’s push for the immediate release of detained Indian fishermen and their boats is a much-needed humanitarian intervention. However, a sustainable fishing agreement and a joint dispute resolution mechanism are necessary to prevent frequent tensions and foster a cooperative approach to maritime resources.
As Sri Lanka navigates economic recovery under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, it must honor commitments to democracy, minority rights, and inclusive governance. India’s role as a trusted regional partner should extend beyond diplomacy to economic assistance and reconciliation efforts. A stable, inclusive Sri Lanka will not only strengthen bilateral ties but also contribute to a peaceful and prosperous South Asia.
