Five escalators to be replaced in Chennai

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to replace several malfunctioning escalators installed in foot over bridges (FOBs) across the city, following widespread complaints from residents and commuters. The escalators, many of which were inaugurated in 2014 by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Dr. J. Jayalalithaa, have remained non-functional for extended periods, causing considerable inconvenience to the public.
According to sources, the Highways Department will oversee the replacement work in key locations, including the MEPZ junction in Tambaram, Chromepet junction on GST Road, near SBIOA School on Jawahar Nehru Salai, Velachery near the TCS office, and the Taramani Link Road near the Perungudi MGR Salai junction.
One of the most affected areas has been the Chromepet FOB, which connects the Chromepet bus stand on GST Road with the Chromepet railway station. The escalator there has remained out of order for over six months. Commuters, particularly senior citizens, pregnant women, and those with mobility challenges, have struggled to climb the stairs and navigate the lengthy ramps. People carrying heavy baggage have also voiced their frustration.
“After a long day at work, it’s exhausting to climb the stairs. These facilities were meant to ease our commute, not add to our stress,” said a daily commuter.
The GCC’s announcement to address these long-pending issues has come as a relief to many, but the public remains watchful, hoping for timely action rather than further delays.
