In a significant move to upgrade its public transportation system, Tamil Nadu’s State Transport Undertakings (STUs) are set to introduce 20 premium multi-axle buses and 746 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses. The procurement process for these vehicles has been initiated by the Institute of Road Transport (IRT). Premium SETC Buses for Long-Distance Travel The State Express Transport Corporation (SETC), known for its long-distance services within Tamil Nadu and neighboring states, will incorporate 20 fully built 15-meter multi-axle diesel air-conditioned buses into its fleet. These premium buses aim to provide a comfortable alternative to private omnibuses, especially during peak travel times like festivals and long weekends. Tennessee Government CMS Key features of these buses include: Electronically controlled full air suspension for enhanced ride comfort Disc brakes on all wheels, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Hill Start Aid, and Electronic Vehicle Stability Control (EVSC) for improved safety Interiors with ABS materials, anti-skid vinyl flooring, and a theatre-style raised gangway Passenger amenities such as LED TVs, USB charging ports, individual reading lights, and optional Wi-Fi connectivity Optional lavatory facilities Fire detection and suppression systems compliant with AIS 135 standards SETC plans to introduce a new fare structure for these premium services, which are expected to be priced nearly twice as much as the existing air-conditioned buses. Expansion of CNG Buses for Sustainable Urban Transport In an effort to promote eco-friendly transportation, the IRT has also floated tenders for the procurement of 746 CNG-powered buses. This includes 446 town buses and 300 mofussil buses, which will be operated by various STUs, excluding SETC and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). The state has already converted 21 diesel buses to CNG, resulting in a 13% reduction in operational costs compared to diesel buses. Building on this success, the government plans to convert an additional 1,000 diesel buses to CNG, aiming to operate a total of 1,746 CNG buses in the 2025-26 fiscal year. This initiative is projected to save approximately ₹116 crore annually in fuel costs. These developments reflect Tamil Nadu’s commitment to enhancing public transportation infrastructure while embracing sustainable and passenger-friendly solutions.
