In an effort to address increasing traffic congestion, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has announced a set of trial traffic modifications at the busy Gandhi Mandapam junction. The new measures will come into effect from Wednesday, May 21, 2025, and are aimed at streamlining vehicular movement along the Sardar Patel Road stretch. As per the proposed changes, all vehicles including Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses coming from Raj Bhavan and heading towards Madhya Kailash will now be mandatorily routed through the Gandhi Mandapam (IIT) flyover. This move is expected to reduce bottlenecks at the ground-level junction.
Additionally, vehicles using the Gandhi Mandapam service road will have to take a compulsory left turn at the junction. They will not be permitted to go straight towards Madhya Kailash, a change intended to minimize merging conflicts and improve traffic flow.
To accommodate these diversions, the CLRI bus stop has been relocated slightly ahead towards Adyar from its previous location, ensuring uninterrupted service for commuters while supporting the new traffic pattern.
GCTP has urged the general public and road users to extend their cooperation during this trial period and adhere to the new rules. The effectiveness of these changes will be monitored closely, and adjustments will be made based on ground realities and feedback.
