Chennai Metro Rail completed a successful driverless train trial on the route between Porur and Poonamallee. This stretch is part of Phase 3, Corridor 4 of the metro project.The trial train ran at speeds of 20 to 25 km/h to check safety. Later, speeds will increase up to 70 km/h, the designed maximum speed.
This route has 10 elevated stations and a special double-decker bridge at Kattupakkam. The Poonamallee Depot is the main place for testing and train operations.
The trains are designed to run fully without drivers. But at first, staff will be on board until the system is fully ready.
Chennai Metro plans to open this route for public use by December 2025. Other nearby routes will be ready by June 2026.
This trial is an important step to improve public transport in Chennai.
