Tamil Nadu has witnessed a remarkable shift toward digital payment methods for electricity bills, with nearly 70% of consumers now opting for online transactions. According to TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation), the fiscal year 2024–25 saw a record-breaking 9.56 crore online transactions, amounting to ₹58,285 crore.
The adoption of digital platforms has steadily increased over the years, reflecting growing digital literacy and convenience-driven behavior among consumers. A comparison of previous years highlights this trend:
2019–20: ₹18,448 crore
2020–21: ₹17,631 crore
2021–22: ₹30,886 crore
2022–23: ₹50,420 crore
2023–24: ₹40,548 crore
2024–25: ₹58,285 crore
TANGEDCO officials stated that enhanced user-friendly features on portals, awareness campaigns, and widespread smartphone usage have played a crucial role in boosting online payments. This digital push is also easing operational challenges for the electricity board and promoting transparency in billing and revenue collection.
Additionally, the government has been promoting digital payments by offering incentives and making bill payment portals more accessible via mobile apps and websites. The integration of multiple payment gateways, wallet services, and UPI has also simplified the process for users in rural and urban areas alike. These efforts have led to a significant reduction in long queues at electricity offices and improved overall customer satisfaction.
Experts believe this digital shift is a step toward achieving a more efficient, transparent, and technology-driven public utility service model. With continued improvements and awareness initiatives, TANGEDCO expects online payment penetration to grow even further in the coming years, aligning with Tamil Nadu’s broader digital transformation goals.
