As Chennai navigates the pressures of rapid urbanization, rising stress, and sedentary lifestyles, health professionals in the city are increasingly advocating yoga as a transformative practice. On the occasion of International Yoga Day, local experts reiterate that yoga is more than physical exerciseāitās a holistic approach to wellness.āYoga is an anchor in a restless world,ā says Dr. S. Lakshmi, a yoga therapist at Kilpauk. āIt helps reduce blood pressure, improve sleep, enhance digestion, and ease anxiety. For many of my patients, yoga has been a turning point.ā
According to city-based physiotherapist Dr. Arun Bharath, yoga is proving especially effective among IT professionals. āIāve seen a significant drop in complaints related to posture, stress, and fatigue among those who practice yoga regularly, even if just for 20 minutes a day.ā
Chennaiās heat, pollution, and long commutes can lead to exhaustion and burnout. Experts say yogaās focus on breath work and mindfulness is particularly helpful for urban populations dealing with daily stressors.
āIn a fast-paced environment, yoga teaches you to pause,ā says mindfulness coach Deepa Raghuram. āItās the cheapest and most sustainable way to care for your physical and emotional health.ā
With yoga gaining traction across all age groups in Chennaiāfrom school students to senior citizensāthe message this year is clear: daily practice, not occasional observance, is the real gift of International Yoga Day.
