England head coach Brendon McCullum has hinted that pace spearhead Jofra Archer is likely to make his much-anticipated return to Test cricket in the third Test against India at Lord’s, beginning July 10. Archer, who last played a Test match in 2021—also against India—was recalled to the squad for the ongoing series but remained on the bench for the first two matches due to fitness concerns. However, McCullum on Sunday confirmed that the 29-year-old fast bowler is now “fit and eager” and could be a key inclusion in the side as England look to bounce back in the series. “He’s fit and eager. He can win matches for us,” McCullum told reporters, indicating that the team management is seriously considering Archer for the crucial third Test. The English bowling line-up has come under criticism for lacking bite and consistency in the first two matches, which has prompted a relook at strategy and personnel. Archer’s return could offer England the much-needed edge with the ball, especially at the iconic Lord’s where he has previously delivered fiery spells. Known for his pace, bounce, and ability to generate movement off the pitch, Archer’s presence could challenge the Indian batting line-up, which has shown signs of resilience so far. The Barbados-born pacer has endured a tough few years battling multiple injuries, including stress fractures and elbow surgeries that kept him away from international cricket. His return is not just a morale boost for the England squad but also a big moment for fans and cricket pundits who have long awaited his comeback in the whites. Cricket analysts believe that Archer’s inclusion could tilt the balance in England’s favour, especially if he finds rhythm early. Former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted, “If Jofra is 100% fit, he walks straight into the XI. A fit Archer is a match-winner in any condition.” With the five-match series currently in the balance, the third Test at Lord’s is being seen as a pivotal moment. McCullum’s confidence in Archer suggests that England is ready to unleash one of its most potent weapons in an attempt to gain control. The official playing XI is expected to be announced on the eve of the Test match. If Archer does make the cut, it would mark a significant return for one of England’s most talented fast bowlers in recent years.
