Driverless Chennai Metro Rail project by 2027

The construction of Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II is in its final stages, according to officials.

The project covers a total distance of 116 km across three major corridors at a cost of ₹63,246 crore. Work is progressing rapidly on the Madhavaram–SIPCOT, Poonamallee–Lighthouse, and Madhavaram–Manpakkam stretches.

The section between Porur and Kodambakkam is expected to be opened to the public by June 2026. Another important stretch, from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, is being prepared for the introduction of fully automated, driverless six-coach trains by March 2027. Officials also indicated that the stretch between Poovirundavalli and Porur will see the deployment of unmanned metro services by December 2026.

A total of 138 metro trains will run under Phase II, including 32 driverless sets. To support operations, large depots are being constructed at Madhavaram and Poonamallee for maintenance and parking facilities.

Officials said that all teams are working round the clock to meet deadlines. Once completed, Phase II is expected to significantly improve Chennai’s public transport network, reduce congestion on city roads, and provide faster and safer travel options for lakhs of commuters.

The introduction of driverless trains will be a first for Chennai, marking a major step in modernizing the city’s transport system. Officials assured that advanced safety features and rigorous testing will be carried out before launching these services.

Commuters and urban planners alike view Phase II as a game-changer, as it will connect several key residential, industrial, and IT hubs, thereby boosting economic activity and easing the daily commute for thousands of people.
