Ending years of anticipation, the trial run of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) stretch between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount has been successfully completed, marking a major milestone for Chennai’s expanding urban transport network. The new service is expected to open for public use by the end of December 2025.
The 5-kilometer elevated extension connects key city areas including Palavanthangal, Alandur, Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, Duraipakkam, and T. Nagar, further strengthening Chennai’s rail infrastructure. Officials confirmed that crucial components such as electrical systems, signaling, and track inspections have been completed, with the trial run yielding satisfactory results.
Once commissioned, the Velachery–St. Thomas Mount MRTS line will offer faster connectivity between southern and central Chennai, reducing traffic congestion and complementing existing Metro and MRTS routes. This long-pending link will serve as a crucial intermodal hub, enhancing commuter convenience and contributing to a more integrated public transport system for the city.
