Construction of the foot overbridge (FOB) at Singaperumal Koil on the ChennaiāDindigul National Highway (NH-45) is progressing rapidly. The stretch, one of the busiest in the region, carries thousands of vehicles every day and was recently widened into an eight-lane corridor from Perungalathur to Chettipunniyam. For years, pedestrians in Singaperumal Koil, Maraimalai Nagar, Kattankulathur, and Potheri have faced severe risks while crossing the high-speed corridor. The danger was greater near bus stops, where several accidents and fatalities had occurred. Local residents had repeatedly appealed for a safe crossing facility to prevent further mishaps.
The upcoming FOB is expected to significantly improve pedestrian safety and ease movement across the highway, addressing a long-pending demand of commuters and nearby communities.
Acting on the demand, theĀ National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)Ā began constructing a foot overbridge near the Anumanthapuram junction about nine months ago. The installation of steel pillars is now complete, and large cranes were used recently to fix the steel walkway across the highway.
According to highway officials, the structure is in its final stages. The foot overbridge will be opened to the public soon, providing safer access for pedestrians on this high-traffic route.
