A detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed metro rail corridor connecting Tambaram, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, Velachery and Guindy is set to be completed soon, marking an important step toward expanding Chennai’s urban rail network.

Chennai Metro Rail authorities have signed a contract with Systra MVA Consulting India to prepare the DPR for the 21‑kilometre metro extension, which will link Tambaram with Guindy via Velachery and provide direct connectivity to key residential and commercial areas in South Chennai.

The consulting firm has been given 120 days to finalise the comprehensive project plan and submit it to Chennai Metro Rail officials. A total of ₹96.19 lakh has been allocated for the DPR preparation. Once completed, the report will outline detailed technical, financial and alignment plans for the corridor.

Officials say the proposed metro link is expected to significantly improve public transport accessibility for daily commuters and help ease traffic congestion along the busy GST Road and surrounding arteries. The corridor will connect important suburbs and support faster, more efficient travel across South Chennai.
