The Indian Air Force (IAF)’s Software Development Institute (SDI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Madras to jointly design and develop a digital communication system for airborne applications, a move aimed at promoting self-reliance in defence technology. The agreement, signed by Air Vice Marshal R Guruhari, Commandant of SDI; Prof V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras; and Dr M.J. Shankar Raman, CEO of Pravartak Technologies Foundation, will focus on creating advanced algorithms for networking, encryption, and secure data exchange in dynamic airborne environments.
These systems are crucial for modern military operations and networked warfare.
“This collaboration with IIT Madras is a significant step towards achieving complete self-reliance in critical defence communication technologies,” said Air Vice Marshal Guruhari. “By integrating academic research with operational expertise, we aim to develop innovative indigenous solutions that enhance the capabilities of our airborne forces and strengthen India’s strategic edge.”
Prof Kamakoti highlighted the importance of the partnership, stating that it demonstrates the synergy between academia and defence institutions. “IIT Madras is committed to contributing its expertise in advanced communication technologies and cybersecurity to develop robust homegrown solutions, in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative,” he said.
The joint project will leverage SDI’s operational experience and IIT Madras’ state-of-the-art research facilities. Key focus areas include secure data transmission, advanced encryption protocols, network resilience, scalability for airborne systems, and integration with existing defence platforms. The collaboration is expected to produce deployable prototypes, reducing dependence on imported systems and enhancing operational efficiency.
This initiative is part of IIT Madras’ broader engagement in defence research and development, encompassing aerospace, AI, and materials science, while supporting the Government of India’s emphasis on indigenisation and strengthening the domestic defence industrial base.
