The Chennai Weather Office has forecast heavy rain in the city and neighbouring areas over the next two days as a low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal intensifies and moves closer to the region.According to the weather bulletin, the low-pressure area is currently located over the sea well south-east of Chennai and is expected to shift north-westward, bringing cloudy skies and rain with thunder and lightning across coastal Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, on January 10 and 11.
The weather office said that the system could lead to moderate to heavy rainfall at many places, especially along the coast and in interior areas, due to instability in the atmosphere caused by the cyclonic circulation. Isolated heavy to very heavy downpours are also possible in several districts.
Residents are advised to be cautious as thunderstorms and gusty winds may accompany the rain over the next two days. Authorities have also warned that sudden, localized heavy showers could lead to water accumulation in low-lying areas.
Weather officials have urged people, especially motorists and pedestrians, to stay updated with the latest forecasts and take necessary precautions during the period of unsettled weather.
