The Ministry of Railways has approved the operation of three Amrit Bharat Express trains originating from Tamil Nadu, marking a major boost to long-distance rail connectivity between southern and eastern India.
The first service will operate between Tiruchirapalli and New Jalpaiguri, passing through key stations including Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Chidambaram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Tambaram, Chennai Egmore, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar and Kharagpur.
The second Amrit Bharat Express will run between Tambaram and Santragachi, with stoppages at major junctions such as Chennai Egmore, Vijayawada, Bhubaneswar and Kharagpur, improving faster rail connectivity to eastern India.
The third and longest service will connect Nagercoil with New Jalpaiguri, covering important towns and cities including Tirunelveli, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, Katpadi, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar and Kharagpur.
Railway sources said the three new Amrit Bharat Express trains, along with several other services — possibly including one or two Vande Bharat trains — are expected to be flagged off shortly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The initiative is aimed at expanding affordable and modern rail travel options while strengthening inter-state connectivity across the country.
