The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued a fresh summons to actor‑politician Vijay, chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), reportedly directing him to appear for further questioning on 19 January in connection with the Karur stampede case.
Vijay had earlier appeared before the agency on 12 January in New Delhi, where he was interrogated for nearly six to seven hours regarding his role in organising the rally that turned tragic.
The Karur stampede, which occurred during a TVK political rally on 27 September 2025, claimed 41 lives and injured over 60 people, prompting a detailed probe by the CBI into crowd management lapses and possible negligence.
Investigators had sought Vijay’s statements on various aspects, including the sequence of events, safety measures implemented, and his arrival and departure from the venue.
Sources said that the questioning on Monday could not be completed as several clarifications were still pending. Vijay had requested an alternative date for further questioning due to Pongal festival commitments, and the CBI has now fixed 19 January for his next appearance.
The agency has also questioned TVK office-bearers, event organisers, and former senior police officials as part of its comprehensive investigation.
Vijay reached Chennai today after his visit to New Delhi, where he met party officials and supporters before returning to the city.
Officials stated that the CBI continues to examine all angles of the tragedy, focusing on both administrative lapses and accountability to determine the causes of one of the deadliest political rally incidents in Tamil Nadu.
The renewed summons reflects the agency’s systematic approach to completing its investigation, ensuring that all responsible parties, including political leaders and organisers, are questioned thoroughly.
Legal experts say the next round of questioning is likely to clarify Vijay’s role and responses regarding safety protocols and crowd control measures at the Karur rally.
