In anticipation of India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations, Chennai city police have implemented extensive security arrangements, deploying around 7,500 police personnel across key areas to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of events.
The main Republic Day function will be held near the Workers’ Statue on Marina Beach, where Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi is scheduled to hoist the national flag. Top officials, including state dignitaries, officials and citizens, will attend the ceremony.
Multi-tiered security measures have been put in place on Kamarajar Salai and surrounding areas. The police deployment includes senior officers, deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, inspectors and constables, all working together to secure public spaces and manage crowds.
Security has been strengthened at high-traffic and sensitive locations such as Chennai International Airport, railway stations, bus terminals, commercial centres and beach areas.
In addition to static security posts, extensive patrols are planned throughout the city. Checkpoints and vehicle inspections have been set up in areas including Madhavaram, Tiruvottiyur, Maduravoyal, Meenambakkam, Thuraipakkam and Neelankarai.
Authorities have also declared the Republic Day zone a “Red Zone” for enhanced security. This includes the stretch from the Governor’s residence to Marina Beach and nearby venues. Drone flights and other unmanned aerial systems are prohibited over these areas to prevent any security threats
