Trikala, Jan 27: A powerful explosion followed by a fire at a cookie factory in central Greece has killed at least four workers and left one person unaccounted for, authorities said on Monday.The blast took place early in the morning during the night shift at the Violanta biscuit plant, located near the city of Trikala, about 320 km north of Athens. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours as the building was gutted by flames.
Emergency crews recovered the bodies of four workers — all women — from the destroyed facility. One more employee is still missing, and rescue teams continued efforts to find them.
At least seven others, including a firefighter, were hospitalised with injuries. Officials said none of the injured are believed to be in serious condition.
Police and investigators are at the scene trying to find out what caused the explosion. Early reports suggest the blast may have started near the factory ovens, which run constantly, but the exact reason is still under investigation.
The company and local authorities said they are supporting families of the victims and coordinating the ongoing emergency response.
