AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) on Thursday acknowledged Tamil film star Vijay’s popularity as an actor but insisted that seasoned politicians like himself and his party have a deeper understanding of governing and public issues, as Tamil Nadu braces for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. Palaniswami’s remarks came amid ongoing political debates and competition from Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party.Addressing the media, Palaniswami said, “Vijay may be a great actor, but we are the best politicians,” highlighting his decades of political experience and asserting that managing state affairs requires more than celebrity status. He criticised TVK leadership for focusing on rhetoric rather than governance and questioned its response to recent events, including the Karur rally tragedy in which 41 people died during a TVK gathering. Palaniswami stressed that experienced political leadership is essential to address public issues and run an effective government.
The comments underscore the intensifying political contest in Tamil Nadu, where film personalities have historically played significant roles — including past leaders who transitioned from the screen to political office — but also face scrutiny over their administrative credentials. With the Assembly polls approaching, Palaniswami’s remarks reflect broader efforts by established parties to challenge new entrants and emphasise experience over popularity.
