The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has strengthened Chennai’s green mobility network by inducting 100 new low-floor electric buses into its fleet at a cost of ₹170 crore. The new services were flagged off on Monday by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin at the Thandayarpet MTC depot.
25 Air-Conditioned Electric Buses
Out of the 100 newly introduced buses, 25 are air-conditioned electric models, aimed at enhancing passenger comfort. All the buses are low-floor vehicles designed to improve accessibility for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and women with children. The induction marks a significant step in modernising Chennai’s public transport system while reducing carbon emissions.
During the event, the Deputy Chief Minister also inaugurated the upgraded Thandayarpet electric bus depot, developed at a cost of ₹33.82 crore. The upgraded facility is equipped with infrastructure to support electric bus operations, including charging stations and maintenance systems tailored for EV fleets.
In a major boost to electric mobility, foundation stones were laid for electric depot development works worth ₹289 crore. The projects include upgrading existing depots at Kalaignar Karunanidhi Nagar, Perambur, Central Workshop-2, Alandur, Avadi, Ayyappanthangal and Padiyanallur into fully equipped electric depots.
Additionally, six new depots will be established at Thaiyur, Taramani, Varadharajapuram, Ottandhangal, Tiruvallur and Mamandur.
The large-scale expansion is aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric buses across Chennai and reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility. With the addition of these buses and supporting infrastructure, MTC is set to play a key role in reducing pollution levels and promoting eco-friendly public transportation in the State capital.
