Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran on Monday alleged that Tamil Nadu was increasingly becoming a crime-prone State, claiming that incidents of sexual violence and violent crimes reflected a serious breakdown of law and order.
In a statement, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said crimes such as murder, robbery and assault had become frequent in the State over the past five years, accusing the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government of failing to ensure public safety.
Referring to a recent incident in Krishnagiri district, he said the reported murder of a 70-year-old man at a farmhouse and the alleged sexual assault of his 60-year-old wife had shocked the public.
Nagenthran also cited several other recent cases, including the alleged sexual assault of a two-year-old girl and abuse of a seven-year-old child, stating that repeated incidents indicated a collapse of law and order.
Taking aim at Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, he questioned the governmentâs claims on womenâs safety.
âIs the Chief Minister not ashamed to speak about empowering Tamil women when women and children are facing such brutal crimes?â he asked, adding that a State once known for producing courageous women was now becoming a place where many lived in fear.
The BJP leader also referred to another incident in Tirusulam where two persons, including a 17-year-old boy, were allegedly murdered by unidentified assailants on Monday.
Claiming that the frequency of such incidents had made people accustomed to crime reports, Nagenthran said the public was increasingly looking towards the next election for change.
âPeople are waiting for the day when this regime will be voted out and peace restored in Tamil Nadu,â he added.
