Following global tensions in West Asia, commercial LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinder supplies have been temporarily halted in several regions including Chennai, as oil marketing companies prioritise domestic LPG distribution amid fears of supply disruptions. These moves come amid reports that refineries and distributors have been directed to focus on household cooking gas needs, affecting hotels, restaurants and other businesses that rely on commercial LPG.
In some states such as Rajasthan and Punjab, supplies of nonâdomestic LPG cylinders have ceased until further notice, raising concerns among small and mediumâscale enterprises dependent on 19âkg commercial cylinders for daily operations. Industry bodies representing restaurants and hospitality businesses have urged the government to intervene to ensure continuity of supplies for essential services.
Oil companiesâ decisions are linked to the ongoing geopolitical situation that has disrupted global energy markets, prompting directives to maximise LPG production for domestic use and maintain equitable distribution. Meanwhile, prices of both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders have recently increased amid rising energy costs and supply chain uncertainties.
