Madurai, Mar 14: Construction work at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai has reached 47 percent completion, according to information provided under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
The details were revealed in response to an RTI query filed by a social activist seeking information from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare regarding the progress of the project. The reply stated that the total estimated cost of constructing the Madurai AIIMS hospital is ₹2,021.51 crore. So far, the Union government has released about ₹471 crore through the central budget for the project.
Officials also informed that the remaining construction work is expected to be completed by October 2026 if the project continues at the current pace.
The AIIMS facility is being built at Thoppur in Madurai district, and once completed it is expected to provide advanced medical services, medical education and research facilities for people in southern Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions.
Meanwhile, members of the public have urged authorities to ensure that the remaining works are completed quickly and with proper quality standards so that the long-awaited medical institution can begin functioning at the earliest.
