Train services have commenced on the long-awaited Velachery–Parangimalai (St. Thomas Mount) extension of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) in Chennai, providing improved rail connectivity for commuters in the southern parts of the city.
According to railway officials, the existing MRTS services operating between Chennai Beach and Velachery have now been extended up to Parangimalai. With this extension, 43 pairs of train services running on the route will operate up to the new terminal, benefiting daily passengers travelling across the city.
The new extension is expected to significantly enhance public transport connectivity and reduce travel time for commuters in areas such as Guindy, Adambakkam and nearby localities. It will also improve multimodal connectivity by linking MRTS services with suburban railway and metro rail networks at Parangimalai.
Railway officials said the launch of this service marks an important milestone in Chennai’s suburban rail network and is expected to help reduce traffic congestion on busy city roads while offering a convenient travel option for thousands of daily commuters.
