Chennai, Mar 28:
In a major boost to railway safety, Indian Railways has announced the deployment of the advanced Kavach automatic train protection system on the Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu suburban rail corridor.
Undertaken by Southern Railway, the project will cover approximately 60 kilometres of one of Chennai’s busiest suburban routes, which is used daily by thousands of passengers commuting across the city.
Kavach, an indigenously developed technology, is designed to prevent train collisions by automatically applying brakes in the event of signal violations and regulating train speeds. The system also facilitates seamless communication between trains and signalling infrastructure, significantly lowering the risk of accidents.
The upgrade will feature Kavach Version 4.0, along with modern optical fibre communication systems, enabling real-time monitoring of train operations and enhancing overall efficiency.
Railway officials stated that the implementation of Kavach on the Chennai suburban corridor marks a critical step towards safer, smarter, and more reliable rail travel for daily commuters.
This initiative reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to improve passenger safety and operational standards across the country’s rail network.
