Chennai, April 4:

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has strongly criticised the move to make a third language mandatory, alleging that it is a veiled attempt to impose Hindi on non-Hindi speaking states.

Addressing the issue, Stalin said that enforcing a three-language policy goes against Tamil Nadu’s long-standing two-language system and amounts to linguistic imposition. He reiterated that the State has consistently opposed any move that undermines its linguistic identity and autonomy.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid continuing debates over the Three-Language Formula, which has historically faced resistance in Tamil Nadu. The State has maintained a policy of teaching only Tamil and English, rejecting compulsory Hindi instruction.

Stalin further accused the Union Government of indirectly pressuring Tamil Nadu to accept the three-language formula, linking it to broader concerns over federal rights and cultural preservation. Earlier too, he had alleged that attempts were being made to push Hindi through national policies and funding conditions.

Reaffirming his government’s stand, Stalin declared that Tamil Nadu would continue to resist any form of Hindi imposition, stressing that language choice should remain with the states and the people.
