Chennai, April 4:

Senior BJP leader K. Annamalai has said he will explain the reasons behind his decision not to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections only after May 4, keeping political circles guessing over his unexpected move.

Annamalai, who was widely expected to be one of the key faces of the party, has stayed away from the fray despite being a prominent leader in the State. His absence from the BJP’s candidate list has already triggered intense speculation, with party insiders pointing to alliance dynamics and seat-sharing arrangements as possible reasons behind the decision.

While refraining from giving details immediately, Annamalai indicated that he would present a full explanation after the specified date, suggesting that the issue involves broader political considerations. Political observers believe the move could be linked to strategic decisions within the NDA alliance and the BJP’s plan to utilise him as a campaigner across Tamil Nadu rather than limiting him to a single constituency.

The BJP leadership has so far maintained that Annamalai continues to play a crucial role in the party’s electoral efforts in the State.

His decision not to contest, however, remains a major talking point in the run-up to the Assembly polls, with clarity expected only after his promised statement in May.
