Chennai, June 1:
A political controversy has emerged after I. S. Inbadurai raised concerns over Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Aadhav Arjuna continuing to serve as president of the Basketball Federation of India (BFI). The AIADMK leader questioned whether holding both positions simultaneously constituted a conflict of interest, arguing that such an arrangement blurs the line between governance and regulation.
In a social media post, Inbadurai pointed out that the minister’s name still appears as BFI president on the federation’s official platform while he oversees the State’s sports administration. “Regulator and administrator at the same time?” he asked, suggesting that the dual role could undermine public confidence in the fairness and transparency of sports governance. He stressed that good governance is not just about the absence of bias, but also about avoiding any perception of bias.
The issue has sparked debate over ethical standards in public office, particularly in sectors like sports where institutional autonomy is critical. Critics argue that occupying both roles could influence decision-making and create questions about impartiality, while supporters may view it as administrative continuity. The development is likely to intensify political scrutiny over governance practices in Tamil Nadu’s sports administration.
