Mumbai, June 5:
Shreyas Iyer has officially replaced Suryakumar Yadav to become India’s new T20I captain. This seismic decision comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s recent Apex Council meeting, triggered by Suryakumar’s individual struggles with the bat despite leading the side to a successful T20 World Cup title defence in March 2026.
This marks the second successive year in which India’s selectors have made such a ruthless leadership call immediately following major silverware. In 2025, Rohit Sharma was replaced as ODI captain by Shubman Gill ahead of the tour of Australia just months after guiding India to the Champions Trophy title.
Shreyas’s journey as India’s new T20I captain will ideally start in Ireland with two T20Is in Belfast on June 26 and 28. This will be immediately followed by a gruelling five-match T20I series in England from July 1 to 11.
