Chennai, June 9:

State Minister for Minorities Welfare A M Shahjahan on Monday said that Tamil Nadu will not implement the new Waqf Act, stating that provisions allowing the inclusion of non-Muslims in Waqf Boards would not be enforced in the State.

Speaking to reporters, the Minister said the amended legislation has not been implemented in any State so far and reaffirmed that Tamil Nadu would continue with the existing framework governing Waqf administration.

He further added that provisions related to non-Muslim appointments to Waqf Boards had neither been implemented in the past nor would they be enforced in the future in Tamil Nadu.

The Minister also pointed out difficulties in uploading Waqf property details on the UMEED portal, stating that the State would urge the Centre to extend the deadline due to procedural challenges.

He made the remarks after receiving returning Haj pilgrims in Chennai and noted that over 6,000 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu undertook the pilgrimage this year.
