Chennai, June 23:
The Union Cabinet has approved the ambitious Phase-II expansion of the Chennai Metro at an estimated cost of ₹63,246 crore, significantly boosting the city’s urban transport infrastructure.
The project will add around 119 kilometres of metro lines with 128 stations, increasing Chennai’s total metro network to about 173 km upon completion, targeted for 2027.
The expansion will cover three major corridors: Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass, and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project will strengthen connectivity across Chennai, linking key regions from north to south and east to west, and marking a major step forward in the city’s infrastructure development.
