Chennai, July 6:
A controversy has emerged over the alleged removal of a foundation plaque at the Nemmeli desalination plant near Chennai. The issue was raised after claims that the plaque for the project’s second unit had been removed ahead of a visit by Chief Minister Vijay.
The project, originally initiated in 2006 under the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government, aims to convert seawater into drinking water to meet Chennai’s growing demand. M. K. Stalin had earlier laid the foundation stone for the second phase of the project in February 2024, with work now nearing completion.
The DMK alleged that the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government removed the plaque for political reasons. However, officials have denied these claims, clarifying that the plaque was not removed but temporarily taken down for maintenance.
According to authorities, the plaque had been damaged due to constant vibrations from nearby traffic, as it was installed along the roadside. Repair work has been underway for about 10 days, and efforts are being made to restore and reinstall it without affecting the inscriptions.
Officials reiterated that the removal was purely for maintenance purposes and not linked to any political considerations.
