New Delhi, July 28:
The Lok Sabha is set to take up the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 on Tuesday, marking the first major legislative business after a week-long disruption over the NEET paper leak controversy.
The breakthrough comes after Speaker Om Birla’s intervention and consultations with floor leaders, enabling both the government and Opposition to agree on a discussion.
The impasse had stalled proceedings since the start of the Monsoon Session on July 20.
The proposed amendment seeks to tighten the 2024 anti-paper leak law, introducing stringent penalties including up to 10 years in jail and fines of up to ₹10 crore for organised exam fraud. The government has positioned the Bill as a strong response to restore credibility in public examinations.
However, the Opposition has insisted that the government first address allegations of excessive police force during student protests in Delhi and other cities. While backing stricter laws in principle, it has demanded a statement from the Centre, particularly from the Home Minister, before normal business resumes.
