Washington, July 27:
US President Donald Trump said that ongoing talks between the United States and Iran are progressing well, with a “good chance” of a deal. However, he warned that military strikes could resume if diplomacy fails, indicating that the pause in hostilities is fragile.
The US had recently halted a two-week bombing campaign after military officials advised that key targets had been exhausted. Despite this, Trump dismissed concerns about weapons shortages and emphasised rebuilding military capacity.
Tensions remain high in the region. Drone attacks were reported in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Iraq, with accusations involving Iran-backed groups. Yemen’s Houthi rebels also claimed responsibility for attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure.
A major point of conflict is the Strait of Hormuz. Iran insists it controls the strategic waterway and can regulate passage, while the US argues for unrestricted navigation. Iranian forces reportedly turned back several ships attempting to cross.
Iran has denied actively seeking negotiations but confirmed indirect communication through mediators. Both sides have agreed to continue talks, with formal discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme expected by the end of August.
