Chennai, Aug 4:

Tamil Nadu Opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin has come under sharp criticism after making an alleged derogatory remark about actor Trisha during a public rally in Thanjavur.

The controversy erupted when Udhayanidhi, while addressing a protest on the Cauvery issue, responded to chants from the crowd with a comment that drew widespread outrage. Political leaders, film industry voices and social media users condemned the remark, calling it inappropriate and offensive, especially given the stature of public office held by him.

BJP leaders termed the statement “vulgar and shameful” and demanded immediate accountability. Several other opposition leaders also joined the criticism, urging political figures to maintain decorum in public speeches and refrain from making personal or gender-insensitive remarks.

The issue quickly gained traction online, with hashtags related to the controversy trending across platforms. Supporters of the actor expressed disappointment, while others called for a public apology. Some civil society groups highlighted the need for respectful discourse, particularly when public figures speak on sensitive platforms.

Meanwhile, members of the film fraternity have largely remained cautious, though a few voices indirectly stressed the importance of dignity and mutual respect. Political analysts noted that such controversies tend to overshadow core issues like water disputes and governance, shifting focus to avoidable personal remarks.

As the row intensifies, there are growing calls for Udhayanidhi to clarify his statement or issue an apology to defuse the situation. The incident has once again brought attention to the tone of political communication in the State and the broader responsibility of leaders in shaping public dialogue.
