Chennai, Aug 7:
In a major step towards modernising electricity services, around 38.8 lakh consumers in Chennai will soon be equipped with smart power meters.
The new meters will automatically record electricity usage, generate bills digitally at the end of each cycle and send payment alerts directly to consumers. This is expected to make billing more transparent, accurate and convenient.
The rollout has already begun in areas like T. Nagar, where about 1.29 lakh smart meters have been installed as part of a pilot phase. Following its success, authorities are now expanding the initiative across the entire city.
Officials say the smart meter project will improve efficiency in power management, reduce manual errors and enhance consumer experience through real-time monitoring and seamless billing systems.
