Chennai, Aug 12:
The Greater Chennai Police has launched an Anti-Corruption Special Unit to curb bribery and corruption among police personnel and provide the public with a direct channel to report demands for bribes.
The unit, launched by Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj, will receive and investigate complaints against police personnel accused of demanding or accepting bribes while discharging their duties.
Members of the public who are asked to pay a bribe by police personnel can lodge complaints directly with the special unit or send details through WhatsApp to 78717 23000. The police said the identity of complainants would be kept confidential.
Commissioner Amalraj said complaints would be properly investigated and appropriate action would be taken without delay if allegations were found to be substantiated. He also appealed to members of the public not to offer bribes to police personnel under any circumstances.
The Commissioner said the initiative was aimed at preventing the misconduct of a few personnel from bringing disrepute to the police department, while noting that the majority of police personnel perform their duties honestly.
Meanwhile, Amalraj held a meeting with FL-2 and FL-3 bar owners at the Police Commissioner’s Office and appealed to them not to pay bribes to police personnel. He asked them to immediately inform him if any police personnel demanded money from them.
Police personnel were asked to leave the meeting hall when the Commissioner interacted with the bar owners, sources said.
