Public sector banks also recorded a sharp increase, with outstanding credit card receivables climbing from ₹1,123 crore to ₹5,667 crore.

Among individual banks, HDFC Bank had the highest outstanding credit card receivables at ₹1.12 lakh crore, followed by ICICI Bank at ₹54,865 crore and Axis Bank at ₹49,702 crore as of March 2026.

IDFC First Bank recorded one of the steepest increases, with its outstanding credit card receivables rising from ₹2,007 crore in March 2022 to ₹9,165 crore in March 2026.

The government stressed the importance of responsible borrowing, credit discipline and awareness of cyber fraud. Tamil Nadu has 128 Centres for Financial Literacy and 75 Financial Literacy Centres, which together conducted 1,02,515 awareness camps during 2025-26.

The sharp rise in credit card dues highlights the growing use of credit in the State while underscoring the need for responsible financial management.
