The mass fish deaths along the Kosasthalaiyar River near Ennore are not merely an environmental incident; they are a grim warning about the price of unchecked industrialisation. Tonnes of fish and other aquatic life washing ashore across several kilometres, with fishermen pointing to suspected industrial and thermal discharges, demand an investigation that goes beyond routine sampling. When water temperatures reportedly touched 40°C near a thermal plant’s discharge point, and fishermen describe recurring episodes of contaminated water entering the creek, the authorities cannot afford to treat the latest die-off as an isolated event. The cause must be established scientifically, transparently and without allowing polluters to escape scrutiny.

For Ennore’s fishing communities, this is not an abstract environmental debate. The creek is their workplace, their food source and the economic foundation on which generations have depended. Repeated pollution episodes steadily destroy fish stocks, damage livelihoods and push families into uncertainty. Road blockades and protests are symptoms of a deeper failure: fishermen no longer appear confident that regulatory mechanisms will protect the waterbody. If industrial units are found responsible, compensation alone will not suffice. Those accountable must be made to bear the cost of restoration, while illegal or harmful discharges must be stopped immediately.

Ennore also tests the government’s commitment to environmental governance. The National Green Tribunal’s directions on restoring the creek cannot remain on paper while the waterbody continues to deteriorate. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board must make its test results public and identify the source of the contamination quickly, while an independent, comprehensive assessment should examine thermal pollution, chemical discharge and cumulative industrial impact. Development and industry cannot be allowed to proceed by sacrificing a community’s livelihood and an ecosystem. Ennore needs restoration, accountability and prevention—not another investigation that ends with another report.
