Modha Rathiri turns a potentially serious wedding-night crisis into a breezy rural comedy, blending romance, family drama and midnight madness without taking itself too seriously.
Marudhu (Rishikanth) enters an arranged marriage, while Muthuselvi (Anishma Anilkumar) is secretly in love with another man. When she reveals the truth on their wedding night, Marudhu responds with surprising maturity. Rather than creating a scene, he decides to help her reunite with the man she loves. A philosophical samiyar (Chetan) joins them, setting off an unpredictable night-long adventure.
What follows is a series of comic misadventures. The lover, played by debutant director Raja Karuppasamy, struggles with a bike that refuses to start, a puncture and friends who are generous with advice but reluctant to offer money. Meanwhile, Marudhu remains calm, creating an amusing contrast between the two men.
The film gets much of its humour from its colourful supporting characters. Bagavathi Perumal is particularly effective as the loud, opinionated uncle whose ideas about marriage and masculinity add plenty of laughs. The drinking sessions, frantic phone calls, failed search operations and eventual brawl keep the night moving at a lively pace.
The screenplay is fairly predictable, and some developments can be anticipated well in advance. The visuals too remain functional, with the limited locations giving the film a modest look. However, these shortcomings do not seriously hurt the viewing experience because the film remains focused on its simple premise and comic situations.
Rishikanth is a major plus, bringing an understated charm and calmness to Marudhu. Anishma Anilkumar handles both the emotional and lighter moments convincingly. Chetan adds an interesting presence as the samiyar, while Bagavathi Perumal makes the most of his comic role.
Director Raja Karuppasamy deserves credit for keeping the film uncomplicated. Instead of forcing unnecessary twists or emotional drama into the story, he allows the characters and their absurd situations to generate the entertainment.
Modha Rathiri may not offer anything radically new, but it delivers what it promises â a light-hearted rural entertainer filled with humour, romance, chaos and warmth. Its biggest strength is its simplicity, and that makes it an enjoyable watch.
