Amstelveen,  Aug 22:

India will face their toughest challenge of the FIH Hockey World Cup so far when they take on co-hosts and reigning Olympic champions the Netherlands in their second-round opener here on Saturday, with a place in the semifinals at stake.

The Indian side enters the crucial encounter knowing that there is virtually no margin for error. Having already suffered a 2-4 defeat to England in the opening phase, India need results from their remaining matches in the second round to keep their semifinal hopes firmly alive.

India’s biggest concern heading into the match is their inability to maintain control after making strong starts. They produced impressive attacking spells against Pakistan and England but allowed both opponents to claw their way back into the contest.

Against Pakistan, India raced to 3-0 and later established a 4-1 lead before conceding twice. Although India eventually secured a 5-3 victory, the defensive lapses exposed a vulnerability that could prove costly against the Netherlands.

The pattern was repeated against England. India led 2-1 at half-time but surrendered their advantage in the third quarter, conceding twice before eventually losing 2-4.

Against the Netherlands, such lapses could have severe consequences.

The Dutch have been among the most impressive teams in the tournament so far, winning all three of their opening matches convincingly. They defeated New Zealand 5-1, Argentina 3-1 and Japan 4-1, underlining both their attacking strength and consistency.

The challenge for India will not be limited to containing the Dutch attack. They will also have to cope with a capacity crowd at the 10,000-seat Wagener Stadion.

The venue is expected to be packed with Dutch supporters, who have provided vocal backing throughout the tournament. A sea of orange in the stands, relentless chanting and passionate home support could create an intimidating atmosphere for the Indian players.

The second-round format makes India’s task even more demanding. The top two teams from Pools D and A have been combined to form Pool E, with the top two sides advancing to the semifinals.

Since India have already played England, the two teams will not meet again in this phase. However, England carry three points into the second round, making every remaining match particularly important for India.

The Netherlands also enter the second phase with three points, earned from their victory over Argentina in the opening round.

The Dutch side’s pedigree adds another dimension to the contest. The Netherlands won their first World Cup title at the same Wagener Stadion in 1973, defeating India in the final. They subsequently lifted the trophy in 1990 and 1998 and have remained one of the most consistent forces in international hockey.

India, however, will take confidence from their recent meetings with the Dutch.

The Indians defeated the Netherlands 3-2 in the final FIH Pro League match in Rotterdam in June, after losing the opening game of that series by the same scoreline. Jugraj Singh, Abhishek and Rajinder Singh scored in India’s victory, and all three are part of the World Cup squad.

Abhishek has carried that confidence into the World Cup. He scored two outstanding field goals against Pakistan and has emerged as one of India’s key attacking threats.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh has also been in exceptional form. With five goals, he is currently the tournament’s leading scorer and will once again be central to India’s hopes of breaking down the Dutch defence.

However, Harmanpreet himself has stressed the need for improvement at the back.

“We need to improve our deep defence for the tough matches ahead. If we get the ball within 25 metres, we need to keep it. We made silly mistakes that allowed Pakistan to score. We need to learn from these and perform better in the future,” he had said after the Pakistan match.

Those words capture India’s central challenge against the Netherlands — turning promising spells into a complete performance across all four quarters.

The Dutch are equally aware of India’s ability to cause an upset.

Netherlands captain Thierry Brinkman acknowledged India’s threat after their win over Japan, saying the Indians are a dangerous team and that Harmanpreet is in top form.

“India is a dangerous team as we have played against them in the FIH Pro League. On their day they can beat any team and their captain Harmanpreet Singh looks in top form,” Brinkman said.

For India, the key will be to remain disciplined when they lose possession. The Dutch are particularly dangerous when they recover the ball and immediately turn defence into attack. Any loose pass or lapse in concentration inside India’s defensive 25-metre area could invite enormous pressure.

India will also look to their experienced campaigners to steady the team in a hostile environment. Midfielder Manpreet Singh, who has made 420 international appearances, brings vast experience to the middle of the park, while forward Mandeep Singh’s 291 international caps provide another important source of composure and experience.
