Chennai, Aug 22:
The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) will host a special Women’s T20 match at the iconic M. A. Chidambaram Stadium here on August 25, as a curtain-raiser to the proposed Women’s Premier League (WPL) in Tamil Nadu in 2027.
The match, scheduled to be played under lights from 6 pm, will see TNCA President’s XI take on TNCA Secretary’s XI. Entry to the stadium will be free for spectators, TNCA Honorary Secretary U. Bhagwandas Rao said on Friday.
The fixture is aimed at providing a major platform for emerging women cricketers from the State and comes at a time when women’s cricket is witnessing growing popularity and participation across the country.
The two teams will comprise probables drawn from Tamil Nadu’s Senior Women’s, Under-23 and Under-19 categories, bringing together players from different age groups and stages of development.
The initiative is being positioned as an important step towards strengthening the women’s cricket ecosystem in Tamil Nadu. By giving promising players an opportunity to play under lights at one of India’s most iconic cricket venues, the TNCA hopes to provide them with valuable exposure and a taste of playing in a high-profile environment.
The match also assumes significance in the backdrop of the proposed WPL expansion and the possibility of Tamil Nadu emerging as a major centre for women’s cricket in the coming years.
The TNCA said the fixture would focus not only on players but also on greater participation and representation of women across the sport.
In keeping with that objective, women match officials and personnel will be deployed in relevant operational roles during the match. The move is intended to encourage wider participation of women in areas beyond playing, including officiating and match-day operations.
The TNCA has invited cricket fans, members of the cricketing fraternity and the general public to attend the match in large numbers and support the young players.
With free entry and a high-profile venue, the association expects the fixture to attract considerable interest among Chennai’s cricket followers.
For the young players representing the President’s XI and Secretary’s XI, the match will offer more than just another competitive fixture. It will provide an opportunity to perform at Chepauk, gain exposure before a larger audience and stake a claim for higher honours in Tamil Nadu women’s cricket.
The TNCA said the initiative reflects its broader objective of growing, developing and strengthening women’s cricket in Tamil Nadu, while creating more opportunities for players to progress through the State system.
The August 25 fixture is therefore expected to serve as both a celebration of the State’s emerging women cricketers and a statement of intent ahead of the next phase of growth in women’s cricket.
