Washington, Aug 24:
Iran has warned Gulf countries against supporting US economic pressure, saying neighbouring nations could face consequences if they assist Washington’s campaign against Tehran.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei said Gulf states should not cooperate with what he described as US economic warfare, warning that Iran could target oil shipping routes outside the Strait of Hormuz if neighbouring countries joined the pressure campaign.
The warning came amid stalled talks between Iran and the United States and after President Donald Trump announced plans to impose what he called the toughest-ever economic sanctions on Iran.
Rezaei said any further action by Trump would draw a strong response from Tehran and accused US policies of increasing the desire among countries to acquire nuclear weapons rather than strengthening global nuclear security.
Meanwhile, Trump again shared a post on social media claiming the Strait of Hormuz as a US-controlled region and said American forces had escorted more than 1,000 ships through the strategic waterway.
