Tamil Nadu Minister Arunraj has strongly defended Finance Minister Marie Wilson amid demands by the BJP for his removal from the Cabinet, describing him as a whistleblower and arguing that action should be directed against those responsible for alleged wrongdoing rather than against the person who exposed it.
The controversy follows Marie Wilson’s recent remarks relating to the alleged payment of a bribe, which prompted sharp criticism from the BJP and demands for his removal from the Council of Ministers.
Responding to the opposition’s attack, Arunraj said the Finance Minister should be viewed as someone who brought the matter to light rather than as the person responsible for the alleged irregularity.
He maintained that the focus of any investigation should be on identifying those who allegedly demanded or received illegal payments.
Arunraj said the government was committed to ensuring accountability and argued that whistleblowers should not be targeted merely because they disclose information about wrongdoing.
The BJP, however, has sought stronger action against Marie Wilson, contending that the Finance Minister’s reported admission raises serious questions and warrants his removal from the Cabinet.
The exchange has added to the political confrontation between the ruling TVK government and the BJP, with the controversy becoming a major talking point in Tamil Nadu politics.
While the opposition has pressed for accountability at the highest level, the ruling side has maintained that the alleged revelation itself should not be used to shield those who may have been involved in corruption.
The issue is likely to remain politically contentious as demands grow for greater clarity on the circumstances surrounding the alleged payment and the subsequent disclosure.
