Former Australia batting great Michael Hussey has turned down an offer to become England’s Test batting coach and instead opted for a part-time consultancy role with Cricket Australia ahead of the next Ashes series.
Hussey’s decision is a significant development in the build-up to the Ashes, with England and Australia having both been interested in securing his services. He will now work with Cricket Australia while retaining the flexibility to continue his existing commitments.
The former left-hander was approached by England’s new head coach Stephen Fleming for the Test batting coach position. Hussey has a strong professional relationship with Fleming, having worked with him during their time at Chennai Super Kings.
However, the full-time England position would have required extensive travel and a demanding schedule. Hussey instead chose a more flexible arrangement with Cricket Australia.
His part-time consultancy will allow him to contribute to Australia’s preparations for the Ashes while continuing his involvement with franchise cricket, the Hundred and his broadcasting commitments.
The decision is a boost for Australia as the team prepares for another high-profile Ashes contest. Hussey’s experience as an international batter and his understanding of the demands of Test cricket make him a valuable addition to the Australian setup.
Hussey previously worked with England as a batting coach during their successful 2022 T20 World Cup campaign. His decision to reject the Test role therefore represents a change in direction after having already contributed to England’s coaching setup.
England could now retain Marcus Trescothick in the Test batting coach role. Trescothick had taken charge in a caretaker capacity and impressed during his stint, according to reports.
For Australia, Hussey’s involvement comes at an important time. The Ashes remains one of international cricket’s most fiercely contested rivalries, and both teams are already working on their preparations well ahead of the series.
Hussey’s role is expected to be advisory rather than a full-time coaching position, giving him the opportunity to provide technical and strategic input without the travel and workload associated with a permanent international coaching job.
The move also ensures that Hussey will remain available for his other professional commitments while contributing to Australia’s preparations for the Ashes.
His decision has effectively ended England’s pursuit of one of the most experienced batting coaches available and given Australia an additional source of expertise ahead of their next major Test challenge.
