Kyiv, Sept 9:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said US envoys presented “very good” ideas during talks in Kyiv aimed at finding a way to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, raising hopes of renewed diplomatic efforts despite the absence of an immediate breakthrough.
US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held extensive discussions with Zelenskyy after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The talks are part of Washington’s renewed attempt to revive stalled negotiations.
Zelenskyy welcomed the American initiative but stressed that diplomatic proposals must eventually produce tangible results. The discussions are expected to continue with Ukraine coordinating with the US and European partners.
Possible future negotiations could address issues including the contested Donbas region, energy infrastructure, grain shipments and exchanges of prisoners of war.
A trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, Russia and the US is also being considered, with Turkey, the UAE and Switzerland among the possible venues.
However, major differences remain, particularly over territory occupied by Russia. Moscow and Kyiv have yet to agree on the key political and territorial issues needed for a comprehensive settlement.
Zelenskyy is also expected to meet US President Donald Trump later this month, when he plans to discuss further military assistance and air-defence support ahead of winter.
