Former US Vice-President Kamala Harris has stepped up her political activity ahead of the 2026 midterm elections while leaving open the question of whether she will seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
Harris is scheduled to campaign in Michigan for Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. She also has campaign appearances planned in Nevada and Georgia in support of Democratic candidates.
Her Michigan visit carries significance because the state was among the battlegrounds she lost to Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Michigan is also among the states that will play an early role in the Democratic presidential nomination process.
Harris has said she is in no hurry to decide her political future. Her current focus is on the midterm elections, including efforts to support Democratic candidates and voter-registration initiatives.
Democrats have expressed differing views about her future. Some party members have questioned whether she should seek the presidency again, while others have said she should be given time to consider her options.
Harris became the first woman and first Black person to serve as US Vice-President after President Joe Biden selected her as his running mate in 2020. She later became the Democratic presidential nominee after Biden withdrew from the 2024 race, but lost the election to Trump.
Her present campaign activity is being watched closely for indications of how she may approach a possible future presidential bid, although she has not announced any decision.
