Tehran, Sept 28:
Iran has reiterated that diplomacy is the way forward in the continuing confrontation with the United States, even after Washington rejected Tehran’s proposal for reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.
The waterway remains at the centre of the dispute because of its importance to global oil and gas shipments.
The Iranian proposal reportedly linked the reopening of the strait with renewed nuclear negotiations and an easing of the US naval pressure. Trump rejected the arrangement, saying he expected a different framework for any future agreement.
The uncertainty has continued to affect energy markets. Oil prices have remained sensitive to developments around the strait, while shipping companies and airlines have adjusted routes and operations because of the security situation in the wider Middle East.
