Navaratri, the nine-night festival dedicated to the Divine Feminine, is not merely a celebration of rituals and traditions. It is regarded as a spiritual journey through strength, prosperity and knowledge, symbolically represented by Goddess Durga, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati.
The nine days are traditionally divided into three phases. The first three days are dedicated to Goddess Durga, the embodiment of courage, strength and power. The next three days are devoted to Goddess Lakshmi, who represents prosperity, abundance and well-being. The final three days honour Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, learning, wisdom and the arts.
“Navaratri reminds us that strength, prosperity and knowledge are not separate aspects of life. A complete life requires all three, and the festival symbolically takes us through this journey,” said Ganapati Sastrigal, a Vedic scholar.
The worship of Durga during the first three days is traditionally seen as an opportunity to overcome fear, negative tendencies and obstacles. Devotees seek the courage and inner strength to face difficulties and emerge stronger.
“The worship of Durga teaches us to face difficulties with courage. Lakshmi reminds us that prosperity should bring peace and well-being, while Saraswati shows us that knowledge is the foundation for a meaningful life,” said Ramakrishnan, a temple priest.
The following three days dedicated to Lakshmi focus not only on material prosperity but also on peace, happiness, well-being and the positive qualities needed for a fulfilling life. Devotees seek the blessings of the Goddess for abundance while recognising that true prosperity also includes harmony and contentment.
The final three days are dedicated to Saraswati and emphasise learning, wisdom and the pursuit of knowledge. Students, teachers, artists and others involved in learning and the arts traditionally seek her blessings during this period.
Navaratri also has a special significance for women and families, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where the festival is closely associated with the tradition of Bommai Golu. Women visit one another’s homes, exchange turmeric and kumkum, and share sundal and other offerings. Over the years, the tradition has also evolved into an important social occasion for women to meet, strengthen bonds and celebrate together.
“Navaratri ultimately reminds us that the Divine Feminine is not confined to a temple. Courage in a woman, compassion in a mother, wisdom in a teacher and the ability to nurture a family are all expressions of Shakti,” said Venkatesan, a Vedic scholar.
For devotees, the nine nights therefore represent much more than worship. They provide an opportunity to reflect, overcome negative thoughts, seek inner strength and begin afresh with greater clarity and confidence.
The celebrations culminate in Vijayadashami, which carries the message of victory — the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and positive energy over negativity. In this sense, Navaratri serves not only as a festival of devotion but also as a reminder of the strength, prosperity and wisdom needed to lead a meaningful life
