Sanaa, Oct 7:
Yemen’s internationally recognised government has launched a major military operation against Iran-backed Houthi rebels near the strategic city of Taiz, seeking to regain territory controlled by the group.
The operation is aimed at reclaiming areas along the Red Sea coast and near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s important maritime chokepoints. Government forces have also reported advances in areas near the strategic port city of Mocha.
The Houthis have denied being pushed back and have continued to mount attacks as fighting intensifies. Saudi Arabia has pledged support for Yemen’s government as the latest offensive adds to tensions across the region.
The renewed conflict follows the breakdown of a four-year ceasefire and comes amid growing concerns over the security of shipping routes through the Red Sea and surrounding waters.
